Northernmost province of Italy (Alto Adige), bordering Austria and Switzerland in the Dolomites and Italian Alps. Predominantly German-speaking (around 70%) with Italian and Ladin minorities; part of Austria-Hungary until the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain. A major Alpine hospitality region.
