Small island in the northern Venice lagoon between Murano and Madonna del Monte, donated in 1046 by Doge Orso Badoer II for a monastery dedicated to St James; passed through several monastic orders before suppression in 1769. Converted in the 19th century into a Napoleonic and Austrian military powder magazine; Italian military use continued until 1961, after which the island was abandoned. Acquired in 2018 by Patrizia and Agostino Re Rebaudengo and reopened to the public on 7 May 2026 as the Venetian outpost of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.
